In Kolkata’s bustling slums, two young women, among many, are changing the narrative of their lives through the universal language of football. But this narrative is unlike any other. Aleesha, a 16-year-old student in the 6th grade, was always passionate about football but found her aspirations confined by the invisible barriers of her community’s norms. The creation of an all-girls football team by iPartner India provided her with the chance to not only play the sport she loves but also to envision a future beyond the limitations set by society.
Similarly, Sameera, a 17-year-old college student, discovered a newfound sense of purpose and confidence on the football field. Once uncertain in a restrictive society, Sana now confidently upholds her ambitions and seeks iPartner India’s support like many other girls and women in Rajabazar, Kolkata.
iPartner India stepped into the lives of these young women at a critical juncture where they are offered support beyond just football training. Through the ‘One Team One Dream’ initiative, iPartner India aims to empower as many vulnerable girls and women in Kolkata. This initiative is a direct response to the stark gender disparities highlighted in the Global Gender Gap Report 2023, which shows a widening gap in India, particularly affecting women’s representation in leadership and technical roles.
Empowerment Beyond the Game
The initiative also incorporates film screenings, discussions, and workshops that address gender, health, and women’s rights. This ensures that the community at large, including men and boys, participates in this journey of transformation. Counseling support and legal aid are important components of the initiative so that survivors of domestic violence find a way out of the cycle of abuse.
The changes in girls like Aleesha and Sameera because of iPartner India’s work are significant. The community now sees women’s roles differently, and the girls are more confident and ambitious. Previously limited in their outlook, they now envision a future full of opportunities.
